THERE are just seven areas in the North-East and North Yorkshire that have fewer than three Covid cases, revealing the spread of the coronavirus as vaccinations begin.

A map, which uses Public Health England data, shows how many people have tested positive for the virus in each area of the county over the seven-day period up to Wednesday, December 2.

Public Health England breaks down case numbers into neighbourhoods called Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs), which are smaller than council wards and based on population rather than geographical area.

It reveals small clusters within the North-East and North Yorkshire that have significantly fewer cases than neighbouring areas as the fist vaccine is rolled out.

Anyone wishing to check the case numbers in their area can find the map here and type in the postcode. It also shows if there has been an increase or a decrease from the week before.

The darker the colour on the image, the more positive test results have been recorded. Areas with fewer than three cases are "suppressed" and left white to protect the identity of those who have tested positive.

Seven–day rates are expressed per 100,000 population and are calculated by dividing the seven-day count by the area population and multiplying by 100,000.

The Government said a further 189 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Monday, December 7, bringing the UK total to 61,434.

This includes 563 Covid-19 cases recorded in the region.

The North-East remains in Tier 3 for Covid restrictions, banning hospitality businesses from opening expect for take-out and households mixing, while North Yorkshire is the only area in Yorkshire to be Tier 2.
