AN EXPLOSION will be heard on Teesside today as part of an operation to dismantle and recycle a 1,400 tonne oil platform.
Able UK will be using controlled and engineered explosive techniques at its Able Seaton Port facility near Hartlepool.
The operation is being undertaken as part of a contract with Heerema Marine Contractors for the dismantling and recycling of several platforms.
It is the safest and most efficient method for this first stage in demolishing the 71-metre tall structure.
The explosion, which is likely to be heard across the surrounding area, is expected to take place between 11am and noon.
Once the initial demolition has taken place, the dismantling and recycling of more than 98 per cent of the platform will be completed within a six-day period.
