SIX people have been arrested in connection with arson.

Following multiple incidents of arson in the Peterlee and surrounding areas recently, additional police patrols have been put in place to tackle the offence and identify those responsible.

On Wednesday, three people were arrested in connection with a fire at a business premise on Fifth Street, Horden.

The 45, 53 and 33-year-olds were all released on police bail while further enquiries are carried out.

On Thursday, a 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of committing arson with intent to endanger life after a caravan was set alight in Pickering, North Yorkshire.

He was released without bail.

In connection with the same incident, a 22-year-old man and 17-year-old girl were also arrested on suspicion of arson with intent, and both remain in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Lawrence said: “While we have made multiple arrests in relation to these incidents, I would encourage anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible.

“The likes of CCTV footage or reports of suspicious behaviour could be crucial in bringing charges against those responsible for these arson attacks.

“Let me be very clear that we do not underestimate the seriousness of the offence, and we will not hesitate to bring the full force of the law against any individual found to be endangering the lives of others.

“We will continue to carry out additional proactive patrols and act on information received and gathered through investigation.”
