ALMOST 600 poppies have been placed on street lights across Chester-le-Street, in a never seen before Remembrance display across the town.

Groups in the town worked together on the project, led by the North Lodge Remembrance Group with support from Durham County Councillors.

Chris Veitch, Chair of North Lodge of Remembrance Group and a Watch Commander in the Scottish Fire Service, said: "Remembering those that have made the ultimate sacrifice through war is so important.

"The pandemic may stop us from coming together for our public ceremonies.

"But these displays will allow the public to remember lost relatives in their own personal way.

"I'd like to thank all the volunteers that gave up their free time and local businesses that supported our work. Many hours have been given up to produce them and displays that have gone up across our town."

The poppies will remain in situ throughout the Remembrance period.
