MORE than 1,300 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the North-East and North Yorkshire.

Meanwhile 22 deaths were announced at hospitals in the region.

The highest toll was at South Tyneside and Sunderland, where eight deaths were recorded.

Four deaths were recorded at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

A further two deaths were recorded at South Tees NHS Foundation Trust, along with another four at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

There were a further three deaths at North Tees and Hartlepool and one further death at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Nationally, there were another 274 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

Here is a breakdown of new cases in the region, according to figures published on Friday afternoon:

  • County Durham: 11,598 was 11,369, an increase of 229
  • Darlington: 1,977 was 1,936 an increase of 41
  • Gateshead: 4,855 was 4,743 an increase of 112
  • Hartlepool: 2,238 was 2,194 an increase of 44
  • Middlesbrough: 3,456 was 3,390 an increase of 66
  • Newcastle: 8,662 was 8,568 an increase of 94
  • North Tyneside: 4,006 was 3,905 an increase of 101
  • North Yorkshire: 7,815 was 7,630 an increase of 185
  • Northumberland: 5,242 was 5.158 an increase of 84
  • Redcar & Cleveland: 2,458 was 2,423 an increase of 35
  • South Tyneside: 3,575 was 3,533 an increase of 42
  • Stockton: 4,481 was 4,408 an increase of 73
  • Sunderland: 7,177 was 7,044 an increase of 133
  • York: 3,652 was 3,589 an increase of 63
