Police have confirmed that in the first 24 hours of local lockdown in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool they received 37 reports of people not complying with the legislation.

Since Saturday, thousands of people living in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool have faced new restrictions, including on who they are able to meet up with.

Between 7am on Saturday, October 3 until 7am on Sunday, October 4 Cleveland Police received 37 reports of people not complying with the legislation.

The force said the calls were concerning people not wearing masks, alleged house parties and complaints that takeaways were open to customers past the 10pm curfew.

A spokesman said: "However, this is a relatively small number of reports and shows the vast majority of people are adhering to the rules."

One warning was issued regarding breaching Covid legislation and this was given when police attended a report of a house party in Hartlepool, where a number of households were mixing.

The spokesman added: "Police will continue to engage with the public to advise and if necessary enforce the legislation.

"We would ask people to continue to follow the guidelines to protect the vulnerable in our communities and to potentially save lives.

"We would like to thank the thousands of people who have followed guidance since a local lockdown came into force this weekend."
