  • New restictions in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool came into effect yesterday. It means most of the North-East now has additional restrictions in place. Darlington, Stockton and Redcar and Cleveland are the only areas without a "local lockdown" in place, with residents told instead to abide by the "rule of six". Elsewhere, different households cannot mix indoors unless in a support or childcare bubble or if there is an exemption. 
  • US President Donald Trump is still being treated in hospital for the coronavirus. He was taken to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre after exhibiting “mild” symptoms on Thursday. He is said to be in “exceptionally good spirits”.
  • Pupils in year seven and eight at Woodham Academy have been told to self-isolate until October 16. Meanwhile pupils in schools run by Outwood Grange Academy Trust in Middlesbrough and Marske have told pupils they must wear face masks in communal areas from Monday. They will not have to wear them in the classroom or while sitting down in the dining hall.
  • Pub landlords in Crook, in County Durham town are to take to the streets to try to save their businesses and livelihoods from what they see as another "nail in the coffin". They are airing their frustrations at the way they think the pub and hospitality industry has been treated during and after the national and local Covid lockdowns.
  • A further 1,047 people have tested positive for Covid in the North-East and North Yorkshire. A further people 49 have also died in the UK within 28 days of a positive test for the coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported by the government to 42,317 from October 2. A further three deaths were recorded at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. 
  • Zoe's Place, in Middlesbrough, which is one of the only baby hospices in the country has asked its supporters to "step up" as it revealed it had had to cut its opening hours and reduced its workforce by 40 per cent after its income dropped significantly during the pandemic. 
  • Police are investigating MP Margaret Ferrier for alleged breaches of coronavirus laws after she took a train from London to Scotland knowing she had coronavirus. SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said she had made it “crystal clear” in a call with Ms Ferrier, who has had the whip withdrawn by the SNP, she should resign her seat following the “monumental” error of judgment.
