The announcement of so-called 'local lockdown' measures for the North East has met with a largely negative response on social media, with the Twitter hashtag #NorthEastLockdown filled with withering takes on the news.
Some were critical of the lack of detail in the announcement.
I've waited 12 hours for an announcement that was 30 seconds long #northeastlockdown

Tell you what, I’ll just crack on as normal. Keeping a distance, wearing a face mask, washing hands etc until the government can come up with something a bit more concrete, aye? #northeastlockdown

Does anyone know how long these restrictions are in place for. No mention of a timescale from the government?? #northeastlockdown

Others said the measures that were announced did not go far enough.
So we're back under lockdown here in the North East, but it's that special type of lockdown where I can meet up with friends in a pub with dozens of other people but I can't pop round my friend's house for a chill film night.

Yeah that makes total sense, ffs

Tell me why my child cannot play out with other children, when he has just spent the whole day in a classroom with them??? Asking for a freind 🤔🤔
So, @MattHancock are you SERIOUSLY suggesting that we can’t see people we don’t live with but it’s fine to be around strangers all day in shops, pubs and restaurants? The curfew barely makes a difference to their current hours anyway! #NorthEastLockdown #ToryShambles #Covidiots
— Siclops (@Spider_Man_Si) September 17, 2020
I'd rather we had a full blown lockdown and really nip this thing in the bud. As long as people are permitted to go to work and school and the pub, they're not going to stomach not being allowed to mix households, and who can blame them? No consistency #northeastlockdown

So let’s get this right I can meet a mate in a pub but can’t go to there house 🤦 I know where I would feel safer and it’s not the pub #northeastlockdown #COVID19

And some foresee problems with the 10pm pub curfew.
Closing pub at 10pm forces people to go house parties!!#northeastlockdown

There was some confusion over why some areas were included but not others.
Hartlepool is in the north east in the county of Teesside but our postal address is Country Durham. So are we part of the lockdown or not ?
— AndyYoung (@YoungOneUK) September 17, 2020
I’m confused why every town that borders mine needs to go into #northeastlockdown but mine doesn’t?

Whereas it’s good to hear Darlington not involved in the North East lockdown, it’s vitally important that this doesn’t cause complacency. We’ve still got to be sensible!! If we’re not then it’ll be roles reversed in a few weeks time and we’ll all be sick as a chip!!
— Dale Sanderson (@dale_sando) September 17, 2020
But some supported the measures.
Woohoo north east lockdown let's gooo!
— Spyro ☆🔞🔞 (@YggdrasillRose) September 17, 2020
And a few found humour in the situation.
With the new lockdown rules for the North East, can I still go to Barnard castle to check my eyesight? pic.twitter.com/JRCzHS2BB2
