A WOMAN was taken to hospital following a suspected hit and run collision with a car.

It happened shortly before 9.30pm on Sunday when the 23-year-old woman was struck near the Four Lane Ends interchange in Benton, Newcastle.

Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The vehicle involved had already left the scene.

An investigation was launched into the incident with officers carrying out a range of enquiries to identify what happened.

A 40-year-old woman has since been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Police have also seized a vehicle which was believed to have been involved in the incident, and are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “This was a very serious incident that has left a woman with potentially life-changing injuries.

“We are committed to finding out the circumstances surrounding what happened.”
