The mention of Dressers in the Echo last week sparked a rush of responses from the public, who all remember the shop really well.
One reader dug out a mug they had bought, they think in the late 1970s, at Dressers. We wonder just how many of them there are?

This picture, taken of the Bondgate corner end of High Row in Darlington in 1958. The old Dressers shop, which was demolished in the 1960s and replaced with retail units can be seen
High Row in Darlington in 1960 showing the Luck and Sons building which was sold to Dressers for £110,000 in 1965. Echo reader Janet Tunstall said she first knew Dressers when it was at the end of High Row, roughly where Santander bank and Spec Savers are now. Janet told us: “It moved into what was Lucks. it was a beautiful shop, with that lovely staircase. No doubt many other people will remember Lucks, it is the same era as department store Bainbridge Barker’s on the corner Skinnergate and Blackwellgate"

Echo reader Wendy Acres also contacted us regarding Dressers. Wendy said that during her youth Dressers was more or less where Santander is now. She said: “It was an odd shop. There were two staircases to the upper part (book department) at the back of the shop, but if I remember rightly you couldn’t get from one side to the other on the ground floor. I think it must have been two shops originally and they must have taken over the other shop. They then moved to the store with the lovely staircase, immediately beyond Barclays bank. That store was originally Lucks. This was a store which was mainly a ladies outfitters for mature ladies with conservative (with a small ‘c’) taste. My great aunts always shopped there for their very good quality (boring) clothes. They did however have a good haberdashery and fabric department”. Dressers also had a good display of hanging baskets
An Echo reader sent us a picture of a Darlington mug, showing on the base that it was ‘Made ESPECIALLY for Dressers of Darlington’. Our reader said the mug is in good condition, all bar a small chip on the base. How many of these mugs are out there? When were they on the shelves in Dressers?

The Dressers store on High Row in Darlington Town Centre boarded up in August 2001. Also note the bus stops on north side of Prebend Row, and the cars on High Row. Echo reader John Hill said: “I remember Dressers very well. The pens were on the right as you went in, and just past there was the staircase leading to the well-stocked book department. I think there were toys and suitcases on the first floor. It was a very popular shop, as was the branch in Northallerton"
The former Dressers printers building was in Crown Street, Darlington, and occupies the spot which is now the William Stead pub
