AS hairdressers reopened their doors, an 85-year-old great grandma was first in the queue at a Darlington salon – with a request to go completely bald.

While others were desperate for colours, bobs and perms, Muriel Joy had her head completely shaved in aid of St Teresa’s Hospice.

Muriel, of Greenbank Court, Darlington, is aiming to raise £1,000 for the hospice in memory of her husband, Maurice, and two of her grown up children – David and Carol.

Muriel has supported the charity in the past but decided to raise more money when Carol died of breast cancer, aged 58.

The head-shave was carried out by stylist Nigel Dowson, at Jigsaw hairdressers, in Gladstone Street.

And Muriel’s verdict on her new smooth-headed look? “I’m happy with it,” she said. “I’ll see how it goes but I might keep it like this for a while.”
