A MAN lived with two women, getting one pregnant, until he informed them that he was subject to registration as a sex offender.

Laurence Caile also failed to notify his offender manager he was living with the women, one of whom had two teenage children, in breach of the terms of his notification requirements.

He was on the sex offenders’ register after receiving a suspended prison sentence for downloading 2,800 indecent images of children, at Durham Crown Court in December 2017.

Chris Baker, prosecuting, said under his seven-year notification requirement he has to tell police where he is living, and specifically if anyone under 17 is also residing at that address.

But, shortly after being sentenced he made contact, via a dating website, with a woman with whom he had a relationship for about 17 months.

She told police he stayed with her at least one day each week for about a year.

Mr Baker said Caile also formed a relationship with another woman, with children, in April 2018.

He would stay at her home when her sons were present, and, “a disturbing feature”, was that she fell pregnant.

But Mr Baker said it was only later that Caile informed her he was on the sex offenders’ register.

During the entire period Caile never disclosed either relationship to his supervising offender manager.

Mr Baker said it represented a “determined attempt” to evade the terms of his notification requirements.

Caile, 42, of Linden Road, Bearpark, admitted three breaches of the notification requirements.

Ian West, mitigating, told the court that despite his deception, neither woman or the children, were ever put in danger by Caile.

“He did not inform them straightaway of his situation and, the longer you leave it, the more difficult it is to say: ‘Oh, by the way, I’m on the sex offenders’ register.’

“When it did come out, it had precisely the effect he feared it would.

“He took the unlawful decision not to tell them straightaway, as he would not get past first base establishing a relationship with either woman.”

Passing a 14-month prison sentence, Judge Ray Singh described Caile’s offending as, “planned, deliberate and intentional”, and said he posed, “a level of risk to both women over a sustained period.”
