A MAN has been arrested and an investigation launched after police found suspicious items inside a house in Gateshead.

Earlier today as part of an ongoing investigation into a report of an assault, police searched an address on Northbourne Street and discovered a number of suspicious items.

This afternoon, police contacted bomb disposal experts to assist officers who were searching the address.

As a precaution, a small number of residents living nearby were temporarily evacuated while officers ensured the area was safe.

After tests were carried out on the items, officers said they are now satisfied the items are not of an explosive nature and there is no wider threat to the public.

The residents have now been allowed back to their homes.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody where he is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Superintendent Brad Howe, of Northumbria Police, said: “We understand that people may be concerned about an investigation of this nature but we want to reassure the public that there is no immediate threat to their safety.

“Our decision to put a small cordon in place and subsequently evacuate some residents living nearby was purely as a precaution. We are now confident that the items inside the address were not of an explosive nature.

“We will continue to speak to a man who remains in custody in connection with this investigation and an increased police presence remains at the scene as officers carry out a range of enquiries and offer any reassurance to the community.”

Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak to an officer or call 101.
