ORGANISATIONS have joined up to host several competitions which they hope will inspire residents to get together in a creative way.

We Are Scarborough and Say Hello Coast are asking people to take part in the Great Get Together event, inspired the Jo Cox Foundation’s Great Get Together event, which seeks to celebrate Ms Cox's life and her vision of bringing people together.

Scarborough has joined in with the national event for the last three years and organisers have decided to go ahead this year virtually, and hold three competitions around the theme of the iconic Scarborough Fair.

Participants of all ages can enter the postcard, song lyric or multi genre competition (for poets, model makers and performers.

The winners will be announced online during the Great Get Together weekend of 19 to 21 June.

Sandra Rees, Scarborough Borough Council Community Safety and Safeguarding Manager, said:

“Never more so than now, we need to harness the power of communities to come together, albeit in a virtual way, to create hope and positivity. I encourage residents to join in with the competitions, which are a fun and innovative way to celebrate Jo’s life and vision.”

Tony Quinn, project organiser and Community Cohesion Officer for North Yorkshire County Council said:

“Jo Cox and her foundation continue to provide inspiration. Her now famous maiden speech to parliament stating that: ‘We are more united and have far more in common than that which divides us,’ has proved to be truer than ever by the way communities have come together in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Hopefully people will join in the fun and share their talents, memories and thoughts about Scarborough Fair and all that it means for us who live on the Yorkshire Coast."
