A MAN was airlifted to hospital after he was injured whilst jumping – or ‘tombstoning’- into a river at a North Yorkshire waterfall.
The man was hurt after leaping off Thomason Foss waterfall, close to Goathland, near Whitby, on Sunday afternoon.
Off duty nurses who were in the area at the time of the incident treated the man until emergency services arrived at the scene.
After almost four hours, the patients was flown to Hull Royal Infirmary for treatment.
The major multiagency operation including rescuers from North Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, the Coastguard and almost 30 volunteers from the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team.
A mountain rescue team spokesperson said: “Thomason Foss, a steep sided valley, is particularly difficult to extract a casualty from and in light of the suspected injuries we requested the assistance of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Helicopter from Humberside Airport which completed a difficult winch from the scene of the accident and then flew the patient to Hull Royal Infirmary for definitive medical care.
“Our team had 27 team members deployed for three and three quarter hours in appropriate Covid-19 PPE.”
