AFTER telling people to stay away from the coast this weekend, Hartlepool Borough Council are to introduce new social distancing measures at Seaton Carew.

The plans are to ensure pedestrians can safely observe social distancing.

With the Bank Holiday weekend approaching and lockdown measures being slightly eased in recent weeks, on-street parking bays along The Front are to be coned off so motorists will not be able to access them.

The bays will effectively become an extension of the existing footpath, creating more space to allow people to stay two metres apart.

The measures, which are in line with current Government Covid-19 guidance, are to remain in place indefinitely although they will be reviewed at regular intervals

Councillor Shane Moore, leader of the council, earlier this week said: “Our priority continues to be to limit the impact this vile virus has on our communities and our vulnerable residents, so our message is simple – why take the risk?

“With this in mind, we would politely ask visitors to stay away.

“I hope people understand that this is designed to be a short-term measure that safeguards people’s health and we look forward to the day when we will again be able to welcome visitors with open arms.”
