A TEESSIDE MP has launched a new campaign to recognise residents across Stockton, Yarm, Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick for their heroic work during the coronavirus pandemic.

Stockton South MP Matt Vickers, who triumphed in last December’s general election, has spent time volunteering with food banks and those delivering food and essential items to the most vulnerable, as well as taking on shifts as a volunteer at North Tees Hospital.

To honour his constituents who are helping people through the crisis, he has launched the Our Community Heroes scheme, where nominations are welcomed for those doing incredible things for the community.

Mr Vickers said: “I am proud of Stockton’s response to this pandemic, and people’s selfless desire to help those in need. Our Community Heroes is a way for us all to recognise those in our part of the world who have gone above and beyond to help others.

“We’ll be celebrating the selfless work of these amazing individuals, and they will all receive a certificate from me, and a token of our appreciation.

“I am really excited to be launching this campaign to celebrate Stocktonians who deserve recognition.”

In response to the coronavirus outbreak Mr Vickers worked with AGE UK to set up a telephone scheme to help tackle loneliness – the ‘Chat to Matt’ scheme has seen the MP call elderly people who live alone to ensure they had some company and a friendly voice to help them through the long lonely weeks.

He added: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to speak to so many residents - I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many of Stockton’s wise, mature characters who weren’t afraid to share their opinions. I’d encourage people across Stockton to pick up the phone to relatives, friends or acquaintances they know who may be alone at this time - it can really help tackle loneliness and if it’s anything like my experience you’ll enjoy it as much if not more than the recipient.’’
