A SPEEDY schoolboy is in seventh heaven after smashing his fundraising target in aid of a hospice that cared for his grandparents.

Cian Crang, who lives in Hurworth-on-Tees, came up with the idea of a ‘7-7-7 Challenge’ to raise money for St Teresa’s Hospice in Darlington.

The youngster is seven and his aim was to run seven miles and raise £700 for the hospice. However, the total on his JustGiving page now stands at a magnificent £2,379.

His mum, Tina, said: “It was all Cian’s idea and it’s unbelievable how it’s taken off. People have been so generous, and we couldn’t be prouder.

“A lot of adults wouldn’t entertain the thought of running seven miles, and I don’t think the enormity of what he’s doing has quite sunk in, but he’s a natural runner.”

Cian’s nanna, Julie Crang, died in the hospice last year and his grandad, Peter Crang, received pain relief services from the hospice before he died in James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, six years ago.

Peter was one of the founders of 1AB taxis, and Cian’s dad, also called Peter, is now one of the company directors.

Tina said: “We have a lot to thank the hospice for as a family – it’s a really good cause.”

Cian is building up his stamina during family runs alongside his mum and dad, as well as 12-year-old sister Keisha. They go running three times a week, covering between three and four miles each time.

Before the coronavirus crisis, the family had started taking part in the Darlington Parkrun, and Cian is hoping to join Darlington Harriers once the lockdown is lifted.

Weather permitting, he will run the seven miles on May 22, on a route which finishes in Hurworth, so he can be cheered on by family, friends and neighbours.

Cian said: “My friend raised some money by running, so I decided to do something to help the hospice because they looked after my Nanna and Grandad. I think it will be hard to run seven miles, but I’m determined to do it, and I’m very happy about how much money I’ve raised.”

Jane Bradshaw, St Teresa’s Chief Executive, said: “It warms my heart to hear about Cian and his 7-7-7 challenge. At a time when our regular fundraising activities have been put on hold these acts of kindness are needed more than ever, and Cian’s tremendous efforts are appreciated by everyone at St Teresa’s Hospice.

“It’s incredible to see that Cian has raised nearly £2,500 after a matter of days; his family should be very proud. Well done Cian, you are an inspiration to us all.”
