Virgin Media has reported that broadband and other services are now back up and running after being down for most of last night.

The issues were seen across the North East, particularly Middlesbrough and Newcastle and the rest of the UK.

Down Detector which monitors internet problems saw a huge increase in complaints by users since just before 5pm yesterday (Monday, April 27).

An outage map on the website saw most issues being reported in Middlesbrough and Newcastle in the North East.

Large numbers of people complained on social media about the internet outage, as people are currently reliant on internet services for working at home while in isolation.

Most problems seemed to be with cable internet.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: "An intermittent broadband issue that started yesterday evening was fixed in the early hours of this morning. This was not caused by increased usage or a lack of capacity. We know how frustrating this was for customers and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
