A WOMAN has been arrested after police received a report of someone trying car door handles.

The call came in in the early hours of Sunday in the Grange Villa area, near Chester-le-Street.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: "Police quickly located a female matching the description provided.

"She has been arrested on suspicion of offences including vehicle interference and breach of Covid-19 regulations.

"She is currently assisting officers in police custody. If you have CCTV, or have seen or heard anything in the early hours this morning in Grange Villa, or the surrounding area, please get in contact us with us.

"Whilst we will be as proactive as possible in targeting this type of crime, we continue to appeal to the public to ensure that they keep their doors locked to their cars and homes to protect themselves becoming a victim.

"Almost every single theft of this nature is from an unlocked door.

"Please take five minutes today to check your car is secure, your valuables are out of sight, and lock your front door when you come back in the house."
