A MOTORCYCLIST was seriously was seriously injured in a crash yesterday.

At about 1pm yesterday, Northumbria Police received a report of a collision between a car and a 26-year-old motorcyclist on Hylton Road, Sunderland, near the junction of Portsmouth Road.

Emergency services attended and the motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The 27-year-old driver of the car involved was not injured but he has since been arrested as part of the initial police enquiries.

An investigation into the collision is now underway.

Chief Inspector Sam Rennison, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “The motorcyclist is undergoing emergency treatment at hospital and we are supporting his family at this time.

“Officers were quickly on scene and the driver of the vehicle involved has been arrested as part of our initial enquiries.

“We now need to speak to anyone who saw the incident so we can establish the exact circumstances around the collision.”

Chief Insp Rennison added: “The roads are quieter but we have still had two very serious collisions in the past two days.

“Please follow the Government advice and stay home. You should only be using our road network if it is absolutely necessary.”
