POLICE are urging residents living close to an East Cleveland recycling plant fire to keep their doors and windows shut.

The fire broke out at the Greenology Plastic Recycling Centre, at Liverton Mines, near Saltburn on Sunday night.

Firefighters have been battling the blaze and smoke continues to pose a problem in the local area.

The Northern Echo:

Black smoke billowing from the fire site

A Cleveland Police spokesman said this evening: "Wind direction has changed and therefore to protect people from the smoke, it is important that they keep windows and doors closed.

"Officers will be knocking on doors of local residents in the area to inform them of this.

"Police and colleagues from partner agencies are constantly reviewing the situation and will keep members of the public informed."
