THE number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the North-East and North Yorkshire has increased by more than 1,000 in just four days.

On Monday afternoon (April 6), the Department of Health revealed the total number of cases across the region had increased to 2,395.

Nationally, 51,608 people have tested positive for COVID-19 out of 252,958 tests carried out by the NHS.

Meanwhile, a total of 268 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in hospitals across the region since the outbreak began.

This afternoon, the mental health trust, Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust reported its two of its patients had died after contracting the virus.

As of Monday (April 6) the number of cases reported by each affected local authority in the North-East and North Yorkshire are as follows.
