THE streets of Whitby were left deserted at the weekend as people took the government's advice to stay home to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Pictures taken by officers on Sunday (April 5), revealed the North Yorkshire town left empty of its usual hustle and bustle - with visitors choosing to stay away.

Although much of Whitby has remained closed with restaurants and cafes being forced to close following the Prime Ministers announcement last month.

North Yorkshire Police were keen to warn people from flouting social distancing rules and flocking to the region's beaches.

At the weekend, the force along with the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum, warned against travelling to the region's national parks and coast in a bid to "save lives."

Meanwhile, urging visitors against visiting the town, a statement posted by tourism group Visit Whitby said: "Please do not visit Whitby for now. However, please do check out everything Whitby has to offer on here and book ahead for the future, and we look forward to welcoming you to our lovely seaside town very soon."
