A NORTH-EAST airport has provided an update following the outbreak of coronavirus in the UK saying it is business as normal.

Teesside International Airport, which has recently begun operating flights to six new destinations including London and Cardiff, said none of its flights had been cancelled.

The Northern Echo earlier reported that EasyJet had named Spain as the latest destination to be temporarily axed from its scheduled flights from Newcastle International Airport.

However in the Tees Valley, the airport said Eastern Airways - due to launch new flights to Alicante, Spain later this year - was still taking bookings for services.

An airport spokesperson said: “We continue to monitor the situation closely and are taking a lead from the relevant authorities including Public Health England.

"There have been no flight cancellations and our operations here are as scheduled.

“The flights to Alicante are scheduled from the 17th July and Eastern Airways is continuing to take bookings for this service.”

An Eastern Airways spokesperson, who said Alicante flights remained for sale online, said: “The majority of routes Eastern Airways’ provides from Teesside International Airport are to domestic destinations, and we continue to operate flights.

"Future bookings to Alicante remain on sale as these flights are due to launch mid-July.

"In other parts of our network we have taken out some flights due to reduced demand resulting from the Covid-19 outbreak. We continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Latest figures from Public Health England now confirm 1,543 people in the UK have tested positive for COVID-19 - while 36 people have died.
