A HEAD of a town council is "particularly proud" to celebrate International Women's Day as its first female leader.
Darlington Council leader Heather Scott not only signifies change as its first female leader but continues to drive change in her role, most recently in the appointment of an LGBT+ ambassador, which is entirely new.
The Park West councillor also champions grassroots, cross-party initiatives to further collaborative work on the council's inclusivity agenda.
Cllr Scott said: “International Women’s Day is a great opportunity to highlight the fantastic contribution women continue to play in our communities.
“I started my career in politics over 46 years ago in a time where it was highly dominated by men.
"After years of campaigning and empowering my female colleagues, I am proud that we are a more inclusive society both locally and nationally.
"I will continue to champion women and advocate them at every opportunity to ensure this council gives every woman the opportunity to be the best they can be.”
