A LUXURY hotel has been asked to make "major improvements" after food safety inspectors gave it a one-star food safety hygiene rating.

Ramside Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa in Durham, which has a number of restaurants including, Asian-style Fusion, The Rib Room and Pemberton's Carvery, was inspected on Friday, January 21.

Describing itself as County Durham's "highest rated" AA four-star hotel, the venue was handed the second-worst rating a food business could have based on a number of factors.

In the UK, all businesses and premises that serve food are rated between zero and five based on their food hygiene and safety, structural compliance and management.

Inspectors assessing the hotel said that while food hygiene and safety was "generally satisfactory," it found there was a need to improve on the structural compliance - which is defined by the cleanliness and condition of the building.

Inspectors said a major improvement was necessary when it came to the inspectors' confidence in management at the venue.

In response, Ramside Hall Hotel said: “Following an inspection at Ramside Hall Hotel,Golf and Spa by the Environmental Health Officer, the company immediately addressed the action points and all structural works noted within the inspection.

“A second audit was then carried out by the EHO where it was confirmed that Ramside had satisfactorily undertaken all the remedial work required.

“The final audit on the premises is due to take place in the next three weeks, at which time the hotel will receive a revised hygiene rating.”
