AN alleged robber is seeking to challenge forensic evidence said to link him with the victim in the case.
Bailey Dicaprio, 22, is accused of robbing the homeless man, taking a mobile phone and a tin of tobacco after punching him in the face.
The incident is said to have taken place behind the Tesco Extra store at Dragonville, Durham, on May 4, 2018.
Durham Crown Court heard that the complainant in the case later picked him out following a police video identity procedure, while a forensic lift from the victim’s clothing produced a close DNA match with the defendant.
But Andrew Finlay, representing the defendant, said the defence plans to seek its own expert’s report on the DNA lift to disprove the evidence of the prosecution witness, said to be an experienced forensic scientist.
The case was adjourned for a trial at the court on July 22.
But the defendant, 22, of Wakenshaw Road, Durham, was bailed to return for a pre-trial hearing on July 3.
