A CHARITY pub quiz to raise money for refugees in Darlington has sold out ahead of the event.

A hundred tickets to the quiz, which will also have live music, a raffle and a licensed bar, have been sold to raise money.

Darlington Assistance for Refugees, the charity running the event, was first set up when members of a church were shocked by a photo of a young Syrian boy that drowned on a beach. The organisation is now dedicated to helping both refugees and asylum seekers in the town.

Darlington was also chosen to take part in the UN resettlement program.

The organisation offers English language lessons, works with a Red Cross representative once a week to help people read their letters and offers general support, while also sourcing furniture and clothes for those that need it.

Volunteer Janet Walker said: “Some people do not have anything but the clothes they are standing in. We also help with school uniforms if the schools can’t.

“For Syrian families, Darlington is not something they chose, but they all seem happy and settled. Families have been reunited.

"For asylum seekers, it is a place of safety. From those who get right to remain, may will stay and do not move on. They regard Darlington as a home."

The pub quiz is taking place at St Augustine's Parish Centre, Darlington, on Friday February 28, at 8pm.
