A YELLOW weather warning has been issued for the North-East this weekend by the Met Office as the UK braces itself for Storm Ciara.

Heavy rain and wind is set to begin sweeping across the region on Saturday bringing with it flooding on roads that could also affect homes and businesses.

The brunt of the storm will hit on Sunday with the Met Office predicting gusts of up to 50 to 60mph, with coastal areas being subjected to 70mph winds.

The Met Office expects some disruption to transport, which may lead to cancellations, damage to power supplies and large coastal waves.

Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are also possible, along with damage to buildings, roads and bridges.

Frank Saunders, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office said: "An extremely strong jet stream will steer a succession of low-pressure systems towards the UK over the next week, starting with Storm Ciara this weekend. Our confidence in the forecast means we have been able to issue severe weather warnings well in advance, giving people time to prepare for potential impacts of the storm."
