RECRUITMENT starts today for 144 jobs in a County Durham town.

The Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) is a body that is being set up to decide who should be barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.

It will use information from the Criminal Records Bureau and the police to give employers information.

The organisation will also update people's records.

The ISA was devised by Sir Michael Bichard, who set up an inquiry into the failures that ended in the Soham murders in 2002.

Almost 250 staff will be based in Morton Palms, in Darlington, the majority of which will be caseworkers and decision-makers.

Caseworker salaries starts at £24,543.

Chairman Sir Roger Singleton said: "The ISA will play a significant part in the improvements to the welfare and protection of children and vulnerable adults.

"It is an exciting opportunity to become involved with a new initiative which will include working with sensitive, yet significant information."

To apply to work for the organisation, email caseworkers @barkers.co.uk, phone 0845- 4563211, or visit www.joinisa.org.
