A COUNCIL is urging people to check their details on the Electoral Register are correct.

A form, detailing the number of people who are registered, was sent to every house in the Stockton borough, in August.

A poor response has led to reminders being sent, and where required, visits from canvassers.

A spokesman for Stockton Borough Council said: "The register is updated annually, and even if the details on the form are correct, it still needs to be signed and returned. Not returning the forms can mean someone not only loses their right to vote, but can also receive a £1,000 fine. The new register will be published on December 1. Forms should be sent in as soon as possible."

Councillor Terry Laing, cabinet member for corporate and social inclusion, said: "It only takes a few minutes to check the form details, amend if appropriate, then sign and return in the free post envelope provided.

"For those who have not responded, please give this your immediate attention and avoid an unnecessary fine."
