POLICE investigating a distraction-type theft in Washington have released an image of a man they would like to trace.

On December 11, police were alerted to a theft at The Blue Bell pub on Coach Road, Usworth.

It was reported that a man entered the pub and asked staff to exchange a sum of money for differing denominations.

The man then deliberately distracted and confused the staff member in order to obtain more money than he started with – making off with £30.

This type of distraction-type theft is often referred to as ‘ringing the changes’.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, and officers have now identified a man they would like to speak to in connection with their enquiries.

He was in the pub at the time and could have information that can assist officers.

Detective Constable Michael Wilson, of Northumbria Police, said business owners and staff should be vigilant and aware of this type of criminality.

“This type of theft relies on sleight of hand and is merely a cynical attempt to steal money from your premises,” Det Con Wilson said.

“I would encourage all business owners and their employees to be aware that some individuals do use this tactic - often asking for large sums of money to be exchanged - with the aim of leaving with more cash than they started with.

“Quite often this type of crime is carried out during a busy period when offenders try to confuse or distract staff dealing with multiple customers.

“If anybody is uncertain of a person’s intentions or are suspicious when asked to exchange money in this manner, you should politely decline the request and notify the police.”

The man pictured, or anyone who knows him, are asked to contact 101 quoting reference 156095Q/19 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555 111.
