Sunday, November 4, 2007: Challenge Cup Group B: Edinburgh Capitals 0-4 Mobilx Newcastle Vipers
VIPERS qualified for the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup following this win in Scotland while at the same time ending the home side's hopes of making the last four.
Capitals now have only a single win in their last dozen games and have been shutout four times so far this season while Vipers have only one loss in their last five.
And yet this game could have been so different as Capitals outshot Vipers in each period and nearly two to one throughout the game.
Vipers' special teams were dominant, however, with a powerplay goal along with two shorthanded counters badly hurting the home side, who missed out on no fewer than 11 powerplay opportunities.
The only goal of the opening session was a shorthanded strike by Colin Shields at 11.50 and the Scot added a second only 27 seconds into the second period to double Vipers' lead.
David Longstaff netted on a five on three powerplay, making it 3-0 at 30.01 and with Capitals unable to find any way through the impressive Ryan MacDonald the scoring was completed with another shorthanded counter by Derek Campbell at 49.05.
