A MEMORIAL to a Second World War hero who sacrificed his life over the skies of of a North-East town was rededicated at a service on Saturday.

Pilot William Stuart McMullen was killed in January 1945, while steering his stricken Lancaster aeroplane away from heavilypopulated areas of Darlington.

The plane ran into trouble as it was returning from a training flight, but Officer McMullen managed to save the lives of his crew members, who he ordered to abandon the aircraft.

The plaque has been kept in storage at Darlington Memorial Hospital, but now stands in the entrance to the hospital's Memorial Hall.

It was rededicated by the Reverend Brian Selmes, senior chaplain of the Hospital Trust.
