THE A19, near Billingham, was closed this morning after a five-vehicle smash.
The incident took place on the southbound carriageway at the junction of the A489 at around 9.15am.
A woman was taken to James Cook Hospital with head injuries, which are not thought to be life threatening. Another woman was treated at the scene.
An elderly man had to be cut out of his grey Ford by firefighters.
A silver Mercedes, silver Nissan Micra, white Citroen van and white Ford Transit were all involved.
The police, fire brigade and air ambulance all attended the scene.
