A VOLUNTEER group that helps children learn to read needs more members.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Partnership (RSVP), based in York, sends helpers into schools one day a week.
The group has 500 members, with about 40 in Hambleton and Richmond.
The Applegarth Primary School, in Northallerton, has been part of the scheme for four years and is visited each week by Ann Arnell and Jane Hirst.
Acting headteacher Alison Goodwin said: "They are someone to talk to and enjoy a book with and it can build up a child's confidence.
"The children see it as a special time and they are part of the extended family of the school. A key part of a child's learning is to have a positive attitude and a self-confidence that they can do well.
"It definitely helps their learning. It also transfers into how confident they are in communicating and working alongside other people."
Mrs Arnell is a former pupil of Applegarth School and first attended in 1947, when she was five.
"It is the highlight of my week," she said. "It is a very worthwhile job. There are lots of advantages."
