A FOREST event will turn night into day by marking Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

A drop-in workshop to make lamps out of willow and tissue paper, and a fleet of small paper boats will take place in Guisborough Forest on Sunday, November 11, from 1pm to 4pm.

At 6pm, there will be a procession to the wood's pond to cast off the little ships, each carrying its own candle.

The event is being staged by the Forestry Commission and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

Diwali is the most popular of the festivals from South Asia, and celebrates the victory of good over evil.

Traditionally, houses, shops, and public places are decorated with small oil lamps, creating a magical effect.

Ranger Cath Brason said: "This is a perfect chance to find out a bit more about other cultures and take part in what will be a really amazing event."

Three local primary schools will visit Guisborough Forest in the run-up to the public event, to make lanterns and discover more about the festival's roots.

The event costs £1 per person, including all materials, and is based around the Guisborough Forest and Walkway Visitor Centre, near Pinchinthorpe.
