MEMORIES of lost loved ones will light up a Christmas tree, as a hospice launches its annual Light up a Life appeal.

Anyone who has lost a relative or friend is invited to dedicate a light on the 12ft tree, which will stand outside St Cuthbert's Hospice, in Durham City.

The lights, which can be booked by a donation to the hospice, will be blessed during a service in Durham Cathedral.

Each sponsor will also receive a commemorative card and their loved one's name will be included in a book of remembrance, to be placed in the hospice's chapel.

Hospice chaplain Helen Bartlett said many people find dedicating a light a comforting way to remember.

She said: "Bereavement support is one of our priorities. We begin by supporting the individual family. Then, after three months, we hold a bereavement service.

"Light up a Life is a very appropriate away of grieving personally, but also alongside other people.

"Sometimes you can't describe what you're feeling, but there's something about being alongside other people.

"We focus on the light, like the light at the end of the tunnel.

"Last year's appeal was a fantastic opportunity for people to grieve, and we hope this year's tree will help people along their journey of life."

Angela Dinsdale, chief executive of St Cuthbert's Hospice, said: "The Light up a Life appeal is very poignant for many people who've had contact with our hospice.

"The service in Durham Cathedral last year attracted more than 700 people."

The cathedral dedication service will be held on Sunday, November 11, from 6.30pm. It will be led by The Very Reverend Dean of Durham Michael Sadgrove.

Everyone with a light will be invited to place a small candle before a large candle in the centre of the cathedral.

The tree, which is currently in Hamsterley Forest, will be on display throughout next month. It has been donated by the Forestry Commission.

St Cuthbert's provides day and overnight care for people with life-limiting illnesses. It costs £1.5m a year to run.
