AN accident on the A172 in North Yorkshire brought traffic to a standstill on Wednesday morning.

The collision happened in the vacinity of Ingleby Cross junction near Ingleby Arncliffe, which joins the A172 with the A19.

The road was blocked for over two hours and traffic was diverted through Ingleby Arncliffe village onto the A19.

A spokesperson from North Yorkshire Police said: "Police were contacted at 7.20am Wednesday, October 16, to a report of a single vehicle RTC on the A172 near to Ingleby Cross. A vehicle had left the road and gone down an embankment.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the A172 was closed on the Stokesley side and from the A172 turn off on the A19, to allow them deal with the incident.

"The female driver and female passenger are reported as walking away from the scene and ambulance attended to them at the road side.

"They have been taken to James Cook Hospital as a precaution – no serious injuries reported."

The road was reopened at 8.50am
