A PROTECTED bird of prey was found dying in North Yorkshire after being poisoned by a highly toxic and illegal pesticide.

Police are investigating after the red kite was discovered by a walker on the Wolds Way in Thixendale last week.

The bird was still alive when found but was very unwell and despite the best efforts of wildlife rehabilitation expert, Jean Thorpe, it sadly died just a few hours later.

A post mortem revealed the bird had been killed by a dose of carbofuran, a highly toxic and illegal pesticide.

Ms Thorpe said: "I am horrified that yet another protected species has been targeted with a banned illegal poison in our area of North Yorkshire.

"Anyone who knows of, or has seen suspicious game, rabbit or eggs out in the open then please do call the police.

"Someone knows something and it might help to protect our birds of prey."

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police, said: "Often poisons like this will be laid on bait, for example a carcass of a rabbit or bird so we would urge dog walkers to be vigilant and do not let your pets eat or investigate any animal carcasses they might come across when out walking. If you find any evidence of bait like this or a poisoned animal, then do not touch it. Many chemicals like carbofuran are extremely toxic and can be absorbed through skin."
