A MOTORIST has denied dangerous driving following a crash that killed a grandmother and left her husband and son-in-law seriously injured.

Van driver Razwan Hussain, 34, appeared before Teesside Crown Court on Monday charged in relation to the death of Mary Graham.

She died after a collision on the southbound side of the A1(M), near Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, at around 10.15pm on Friday, August 2.

She had been travelling with her family in a silver Toyota Auris when it collided with a white Transit van.

Mrs Graham died from her injuries in the days after the crash, which also left her husband and son-in-law critically hurt.

Mr Graham remains in hospital but the other man has been discharged.

The female driver of the Auris and an 11-year-old boy were also taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Hussain, of Pilgrim Avenue, Dewsbury, Kirklees, was arrested at the scene.

He has admitted driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance and aggravated vehicle taking.

But he has pleaded ‘not guilty’ to causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

A trial date has been fixed for January 28 next year.

Hussein was remanded into custody by Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC and no application for bail was made.
