POLICE closed the A172 in both directions after a lorry overturned in the early hours of Monday morning.
The road was closed between B1365 Thirsk Road (Stokesley) and the Carlton-in-Cleveland turn off (Carlton) but has now reopened.
Police said the accident happened near to Chestnut Farm, which is understood to be near Great Busby, a tiny village just outside Stokesley.
It followed an accident just after midnight in which a white Nissan Navara pick-up truck and a JCB tractor, which was towing a trailer, collided on the A172, the main road connecting Stokesley with thh A19.
The driver of the Nissan Navara sustained serious injuries and was taken to James Cook Hospital for treatment.
Police are appealing for anyone who either witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle before it, to contact them. They are particularly interested to speak to anyone who may have captured dash cam footage.
