VOLUNTEERS braved the rain to help keep Darlington tidy in the latest “Pick, Pie and Pint” event.

Even Percy the pooch joined the clean-up brigade for the popular environmental initiative organised by Darlington Cares.

Percy, a Welsh Terrier who has his own Twitter account, belongs to Darlington councillor Mary Layton who said: “Percy’s really sociable so he loves joining in and being the centre of attention. We’re training him to pick up litter too!”

The event, in which volunteer litter-pickers are rewarded with a pie and a pint at the Hole In The Wall pub in the Market Square, was sponsored by The Cornmill Shopping Centre.

Cornmill Centre manager Susan Young said: “We’re proud to sponsor a great community event and it’s lovely to see so many people giving something back to the town.”

Volunteers spanned the generations and 10-year-old Caitlyn Porter said: “Litter ruins the environment, so I want to play my part in keeping the town clean and tidy.”

Darlington Cares Programme Officer, Chelsea Johnson, said: “Pick, Pie and Pint was launched in 2017 and this is the 12th one we’ve held. It’s always really well supported and we’re so grateful to all of the volunteers who play their part.”

The next event – at 4pm on September 6 – is sponsored by EE. Young participants will also be treated to a free ice cream from a vintage tricycle, courtesy of Ultrasound Events.
