CCTV footage which shows a thief stealing a bike from outside a school has been released by police in a bid to track down the culprit.

Just after 3pm on Tuesday, July 17, the high value Trek Mountain Bike was stolen from outside Thorp Academy in Ryton, Gateshead.

Northumbria Police officers have been carrying out enquiries to identify the person responsible and trace the stolen bicycle.

They have now released CCTV footage of the thief in action- in which he is seen entering the school grounds through a gate in the top right of the screen- in the hope that the public can help identify him.

The Northern Echo:

PC Andy Hyde, of the Gateshead West Neighbourhood Policing Team, called on the man to come forward himself.

He said: “This was a high value bicycle that was well-used by the victim and they are devastated by the theft.

“It has been secured outside the school when someone has entered the school grounds and taken it.

“This has been quite a brazen theft and we need to trace the person in the footage to get their account.

“If you are the person in this footage, or if you know who he is, then please pick up the phone and contact police.”
