A SERIES of sporting challenges and events is set to take over Newcastle and Gateshead as it debuts on Saturday, August 10.

In partnership with Newcastle City Council and Gateshead Council, the new 'TRY on the Tyne' event will include the first ever major duathlon (run-bike-run) to be held on Tyneside, using the River Tyne and landmark bridges as a venue.

A series of running events, in particular runs of various distances, will mainly follow the same routes as the duathlon's running legs.

The Northern Echo:

Organised by Events of the North, the event will be incorporating the 5K and 10K runs and junior races.

Steve Cram, event director at TRY on the Tyne, said: “It is our stated ambition to one day host a triathlon with Newcastle and Gateshead councils and this is a great first step towards that aim.

"We are encouraging people to come and try the duathlon, at either standard or sprint distance, on this superb course, and we’re also offering another wonderful running opportunity on Tyneside for to those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground."

The Tyneside councils said they were backing the sumer event as part of a wider push to inspire residents and visitors, of all ages, to get active through cycling and running.

The Northern Echo:

Mr Cram said: “We are keen to welcome beginners as much as experienced athletes, and we will also be targeting youngsters as this will be a great summer event for them challenge themselves with and really enjoy.

"There’s something for everyone to come and try – it is going to be an exciting addition to the summer sporting calendar.”

As part of the events, roads on both banks of the River Tyne will be closed to allow full use of the Swing Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
