FOR most people, treating a headache with a tablet will sort out the problem. But more chronic or recurring health issues, and injuries, need individual attention, diagnosis and treatment. Choosing to consult and be treated by a qualified, experienced practitioner is the best path to future good health and wellbeing.

There are many highly-qualified and skilled practitioners in the North-East, so we need to take time out from our busy lives, listen to our bodies, and seek the right professional advice to get us back to better fitness and an improved quality of life.

Teesdale Acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture is part of an ancient system of medicine which originated over 2,000 years ago in China. Its effectiveness is being increasingly been verified by modern scientific research.

Teesdale Acupuncture is a traditional acupuncture practice based in Barnard Castle, serving Teesdale, Weardale and the Northern Pennines region.

Jill is a fully qualified, BAcC registered acupuncturist. In addition to acupuncture needling, she is also qualified in and practises other traditional East Asian therapies, including gua sha, cupping and moxibustion. She also uses specific acupuncture microsystems including auriculotherapy, scalp acupuncture and facial rejuvenation acupuncture.

One of the most common aims of people who make appointments with Jill for acupuncture is to reduce their medication, whatever the condition they're seeking treatment for. While she can't give any advice on medication, people will often go back to their GP to review their medication once acupuncture treatment starts to take effect.

“I am so pleased I had the opportunity to have acupuncture sessions with Jill. I’m suffering from neck, shoulder and lower back pain; I have improved thanks to Jill listening and understanding my complaints. I always come away feeling relaxed and happy, I now have my flexibility back and a better quality of life. Thank you, Jill.” PD, Durham

Pilates by Physiotherapy

The Northern Echo:

At Pilates by Physiotherapy we believe Pilates is even more relevant today than it was when it was created by its founder, Joseph Pilates in the 1930s.

The benefits of Pilates include improving posture, strength and flexibility, as well as improving balance and co-ordination. Reducing imbalance between our different muscle groups is important for everyone, from those who sit at a desk all day to those who do lots of sport, including running and cycling. Pilates challenges the body and the mind to gain improved efficiency of movement.

Our clients are enjoying Pilates for leisure and lifestyle. Some are competing in marathons and triathlons, or are just starting off with Couch to 5k. Others have neurological conditions such as MS. They all benefit from being taught Pilates by experienced Physiotherapists. Our hands-on, personalised approach to Pilates enables clients to feel how they are moving, and ensures they are performing each exercise in the most effective way.

Age is no barrier to participating in Pilates. Recent evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of Pilates in improving balance, lower limb strength and flexibility and cardiorespiratory fitness in the over 60s.

Client Feedback:

“Pilates has given my body length, strength and balance and given my mind a lovely rest.”

“Pilates strengthens my body and delights my mind.”

Reiki from the Source

The Northern Echo:

Carole Dawson has 30 years’ experience in Natural Health, practising Reflexology and teaching the original, authentic Japanese style of Reiki called Jikiden Reiki - meaning ‘directly passed down’.

She also delights in empowering others to take charge of their own health and well-being, with her regular local Reiki courses, showing how Reiki can be used within the family for day to day ailments as well as more serious conditions.

She became interested in Reiki in 1995 when a colleague gave her a short treatment with very powerful results. Reiki is a hands-on energy treatment for the improvement of body and mind, which is carried out over clothing while lying on a massage bed, and is suitable for anyone of any age or state of health. The therapist places hands lightly on areas of the body to make energy available for healing.

As a Reflexologist she trained with the Bayly School - the first Reflexology training school to be set up in Great Britain.

Carole holds Reiki Courses, locally, throughout the year, which can be booked through the website.

She also works closely with John Cookson, podiatrist, and Sarah Johnson, Physiotherapist, at Footstop Podiatry & Sports Injury Clinic, and uses Reflexology and Reiki to complement their treatments and create a complete health package for clients.

“I have recently completed Reiki training with Carole and I can’t recommend it enough. Carole is a great teacher who has a wealth of knowledge, all content is explained thoroughly and I really resonated with it. It’s been a pleasure to attend the courses and I can’t wait to start practicing! Thank you Carole!” Rachel Elizabeth

“I love my Reflexology sessions – it’s an hour of complete relaxation with physical and emotional benefits lasting for weeks. I go every 4-5 weeks just to keep everything balanced and in tune.” Hilary, Newton Aycliffe

Sarah Johnson Physiotherapy

Sarah qualified from Teesside University and then spent six years working for the NHS, gathering experience and confidence as a therapist, before moving into full-time private practice.

She is a spinal specialist of 26 years’ experience, often solving spinal problems that have been untreatable by others, giving many people relief after years of chronic pain.

Regular treatment and management could dramatically improve their quality of life. With the correct bespoke treatment programme, Sarah can help people to restore function and reduce pain, where NHS treatment has failed.

She also treats all musculoskeletal problems, which means any pain or injury involving the joints or soft tissue of the body. This could be a new injury or something that someone has lived with for many years.

Sarah is predominantly hands-on in her approach, and often incorporates the use of acupuncture for pain relief. She also works closely with John Cookson, Podiatry, and Carole Dawson, Reflexology & Reiki, at Foot Stop Podiatry & Sports Injury Clinic to create a complete health package.

"I have had quite a few injuries over the years, and Sarah has been great at helping me with my rehabilitation. I believe good physio is essential for a full and speedy recovery. SJ Physio is an ideal location to get sorted!!" Alan Hinkes, OBE
