A CONTROLLED explosion has been carried out at a building site after a piece of ordnance was discovered.
Police and bomb disposal experts were called to the site in Chester-le-Street and the operation was carried out at 4.15pm.
A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “We were called at 1.10pm after a historical piece of ordnance was discovered by construction workers on a building site in Gibside, in Chester-le-Street.
“Experts from the army’s bomb disposal unit were also called and safely disposed of the item in a controlled explosion.”
