THE prosecution of a man accused of causing the death of his mother has concluded this morning.

Adam Burnside is charged with manslaughter and attempted murder after he violently attacked his stepfather with a knife.

The 45-year-old’s mother, Susan Ward, collapsed during the violent altercation in their home on Yarm Road, Darlington, in January this year.

His stepfather Paramijit Singh suffered ten injuries during the unprovoked attack in his home, including injuries to his neck, back and one stab would which pierced his heart, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Nicholas Dry, prosecuting, told jurors that Burnside suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) however, doctors had declared him medically fit to stand trial as he didn’t suffer from any learning disability.

Yesterday, the court was told how the defendant’s attack triggered an asthma attack – a condition Burnside knew his mother suffered from – or a fatal heart attack. His mother was discovered unconscious in a pool of sick when the emergency services arrived at the scene.

Burnside, of Garrick Court, Darlington, denied the charges but had earlier pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm for the attack on Mr Singh and the possession of a bladed article.

His defence is expected to start this afternoon.
