THE A689 has reopened over 24 hours after it was closed by Durham Police.
The road was closed between Coundon Gate and Leasingthorne after police stopped a large motorhome.
Durham Police said on Saturday evening: "We appreciate this has been closed for a significant amount of time, and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
"Thank you for your patience while our officers have been conducting inquiries."
Durham Police have offered no further details about the operation despite attempts by The Northern Echo to clarify the situation.
A local resident said workers on a nearby industrial estate were held there for a number of hours on Friday evening while officers dealt with the incident.
A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said on Friday evening: "Please avoid the area and find an alternative route.
"The road will be closed for the foreseeable future and further updates will follow."
